Is there a way to import an AI file into Photoshop while maintaining layers?

When I try, all I get is a flatten bitmap. I want to maintain the vector qualities of the elements that I created in Illustrator.

I have Photoshop CS3 by the way.

You can't. Illustrator is a vector app, Photoshop is Raster.
If you export with PATHS you might have some success, but that's the closest you're going to come to vector in PS.

Export as Path? How do I do that?

I see "File -> Export". And save as PSD is one of the options. But I don't see "export as path" option.

I have Illustrator CS2.

Try copying what you want to export into photoshop, then paste it as a smart object in Photoshop. Then you should be able to edit that object with the path selection tool and the direct selection tool.
