Photoshop does not have a canvas separate from the image itself; it defines the image as the background layer. You have to use the selection tools to define what you're moving on that layer. If you select all and copy or cut to a new layer, then your image is separated and you can use the background layer as a pseudo "canvas", and work with the image on the separate layer.

Well, a blank PSD file, with nothing on it, IS referred to as the 'canvas' though. You add things in layers on top of that 'canvas'.

In a new PSD file, layer 0 is your 'canvas', most artists leave it as transparent. Add a layer, select that layer, and draw on it. You can then move things around with the move tool.

Yeah also if you want to become good in photoshop which is better than fireworks I would suggest taking tutorials also Photoshop CS3 is only backwards to you because you are used to fireworks which is a beginner software Photoshop is more for advanced people.

Yes, but that doesn't always mean it's better.

In fact, generally speaking, it's just the opposite.

Tutorials are definitely the way to go.

The learning curve is everybody's biggest complaint about Photoshop.

Hi There -

Stay with the advise you are getting here -- Photoshop is DEFINITELY worth the learning curve. And, there are hundreds of books to help you, plus tutorials as already mentioned. Here's another tutorial series on using Photoshop to create art for the web:
http://webhelpermagazine.com/2006/06...or-web-series/

Good luck. Have fun.

Scott
