Whenever I use a gradient fill, it fills the whole area, rather than just the bit I have drawn on. For example, if I want to change the fill of a square to a gradient fill, it fillls the whole canvas, rather than the square. I can get round this, but I could swear this isn't what is was doing before. What has changed?

Make sure the area you want to fill is the active selection, then apply the fill.

If you haven't made a selection the gradient fill tool will fill whatever it considers to be a like area. Also, if you're in another layer and don't realize it, without a specific selection it will fill that whole layer, whatever ps considers to be a like area.

just make it sure the layer you want to fill is in the one in highlight on the layer panel
