IMO, Photoshop and fireworks both are having nice features.Photoshop is the bitmap editor and designed for artists working on images for print. Fireworks is vector based, so it actually has more in common with Illustrator than Photoshop.
I think integrated use of photoshop and fireworks for designing will give better results.

I thought Macromedia Freehand was the vector package? Fireworks and Photoshop both have some rudimentary vector tools in them but they are ultimately raster graphics applications.
Adobe does Photoshop for raster, Illustrator for vector, with Macromedia (as was) you have fireworks and freehand, and then there's Corel with Photopaint and Corel DRAW.

Have a look at the GIMP for bitmap stuff, and Inkscape for vector stuff, those two are both free and open source.

Why not sum up your site, and create one image with all your sites photos and image map it...It might be cool.

Cos then it would take longer to load, could not be generated dynamically, and would not resize when the browser window does.
