filter - render - clouds
filter - render - difference clouds
filter - redner - lighting effects, change the colours of the effect to orange

Hi... This is an image I found on the internet...

... And this is the same image after I re-touched it.

For me, a good fire effect can be made using the smudge tool, the one I used on this image to edited it. Every person, of course, use a different method but for me this is a good way.

It would be great if you could tell us how you did that, since that is the whole point of the thread....

lol.. sorry. I was in "show off mode" I just used the first tutorial in that google search, then addedmy own displacement map to the fire to make it a little more jagged (displacement map was just a fire texture, displacement was about 8 both vert + horiz), then I added an inner glow of yellow to orange to brown to the center of the text, then added a light opacity, black satin on top of the text to give it a nice texture. I even made a PS action to do most of it. Shall I post the .atn file?

Yes, you can get some very realistic looking fire with that approach.

I noticed that I don't have the liquify command, using version CS2 but I was able to get the same effect with ocean ripple (filter->distort->ocean ripple). Just play around a little with the size and magnitude.

just a quick f.y.i if you like to create static fire effects in p/s you may want to look into the plug in called eye candy from alien skin for p/s it can create of very user controllable fire effect from a mask in p/s...actually the program allows you to make fire, snow, smoke etc.. and gives you complete control over height, width, color, intensity and the like...there is also a motion version available for after effects if you want to make it for a flash movie...
