Does anyone here use Illustrator?

I just downloaded the trial file and it looks a lot like the Photoshop interface.

My question is, If I know photoshop, will the learning curve for Illustrator be steap?

yes. I've been using photoshop for about 10 years and Freehand for about 6 years. I've been spending the past few weeks learning illustrator. it's more complicated than freehand and the menus are not similar to photoshop.

Thanks jason_bristol for the quick reply.

Since I don't have much time these days, I guess I'll stick to using Photoshop CS2 and learn how to use it to it's full potntial, the same goes for Imageready.

Illustrator isn't much like Photoshop at all. If you have thoroughly mastered Photoshop's Pen Tool, then you've got a great start on handling Illustrator.

Illustrator produces VECTOR graphics, which means they will scale up or down w/o losing any quality.

Photoshop produces RASTER graphics, which will degrade in quality, especially when scaled UP.

I discovered the "smart object" feature in CS2, a few weeks ago. This allows the user to define a layer as a smart object which turns it into a vecor image that allws reizing without quality degridation.

I was trained in both Illustrator and Photoshop, but that was several years ago.

Illustrator is good for one big reason, its alot easier to draw something or create your own graphic and then save it as a jpg file to use as a header or logo or something.

Like LadynRed said: AI is vector oriented, PS is raster oriented. The very big difference is in approach. You must think different in AI than PS. Paths, curves....IMHO, in the beginning, AI is slightly complicated than PS.

I can draw perfectly good vector shapes in PS, you just have to know how the Pen tool works and it is, IMO, one of the hardest to master. However, if you're going to be doing logos and the like for a business, Illustrator is the way to go. A lower-cost alternative would be Xara. I use Xara, it does everything Illustrator does. The user interface is different, but not hard to learn and the video tutorials provided are very good.

yea.. idk pen tool was easy to me.. i mastered on it quick, there was 2 styles i used it tho, 1 was where most people used it where u hold on to the mouse button and drag the 2 anchor lines to get the loop u want, while sometimes i would just go quickly with clicking points and then clicking the middle and holding down "alt" and drag it to make the loop, but i had the eye to know where they loop will end up being
