I see photoshop PS2 is selling for a lot of money. Is it worth it as I'm on a tight budget?

It's CS 2; CS is short for "Creative Suite." Photoshop is part of the "suite," along with Illustrator, and many others. I'm not sure whether you're looking at all of them as a package, or just Photoshop. The second option is much less, but still the price of maybe 15 years of web hosting.

Whether Photoshop is worth the money or not really depends a great deal on what you're planning to use it for. Photoshop is about $700 or $800 USD, while Photoshop Elements is $99 last I heard. But Elements doesn't have the Curves adjustment, so if you want to work on contrast and brightness you're forced to use Levels, and for color it's the Color Balance tool. I'm guessing that means nothing to you, and if that's the case, the full version isn't worth the money. I simply wouldn't use image editing software without Curves.

There's also The Gimp, which is actually better than Photoshop in a few ways. For example, it can display a true 12 or 16 bit histogram, which can be d@mn useful if you use a digital SLR, use RAW mode, and do your own linear conversions. I never really got used to the interface in The Gimp, though ... I prefer PS myself.

I agree, if you're going to be doing a lot of photo editing Photoshop is the way to go. If you're not going that far, PaintShopPro offers a great deal of the same functionality for around $100.

if you're on a tight budget, photoshop elements is the way to go.
Or you can look for an older version on ebay.

I completely agree on this. I have Photshop CS, Paint Shop Pro, and Gimp. I have also used the trial for Photoshop Elements. Photoshop CS is the best, but also the priciest. Paint Shop Pro isn't too bad, but I get frustrated with it. I have recently been using Gimp as well. It's free so you can check that out too.

I just wanted to add that the newest version of Photoshop is CS3.
It is very expensive though. Everyone has been giving good advice for alternatives.

It is hard to say whether upgrading photoshop will be worth it to you. In my opinion, if you are a mainstream photoshop user who does a lot of advanced work and frequently uses a vast majority of the features photoshop has to offer, and especially if you do graphics for money, then upgrading is worth it. If you do a image here and there, nothing real advanced then you may not see that much of a difference. The difference between CS2 and CS3 is far greater than the difference between CS and CS2, since CS3 has made a lot of interface changes, and added some helpful features such as smart filters.

I suggest that u must get CS3.It has a new feature called Smart filters which allow u to apply filters without destruting the layer contents.U can also rearrange the filters order or een disable to see hoe it affects the image. Also i like the new vanishing point feature which allows u to create planes at an ange to each other.
Another feature is timeline based animation

I have not tried CS3. But CS1 is much preferred over CS2 for me. It seems to me CS2's "updates" were a few new filters and a whole lot of memory hogging.

I guess it's worth it. I have been using Photoshop for a while and It's been a great software for almost all your picture editing needs.

I heard that CS2 was slower than CS because of the memory usage. I don't really see the difference
