I use 700px x 500px since it is 100px smaller than the smallest used resolution, and it gives me plenty of room to work with.

I use 745px for the width of my largest outside/border table. Then, I'll throw all my content inside that table. This will put you almost right to the edge of web browsers surfing at 800X600. Which will give you more room for your content.

I guess a lot of people still are surfing at that resolution.

I tend to use a width of 760 and adjust the height to the content

720px for a fixed width or use a fluid layout. Many who use 800x600 do not expand their browsers to full screen. And beleive it or not, there are still people who use 640x480.

I dont believe that it's still worth to design for 640*480. I read so many discussions about this during the last years but the main reason not to design for 640 remains that windows xp wont let you choose anything below 800*600 unless you start in safe mode or use corrupted drivers

@greenie: Wow, that's harsh, not to mention unrealistic. I don't design for 640 anymore, but I certainly would never keep them out. They know they'll probably have to do some side scrolling if their monitor/screen size is that small. And to ignore 800 x 600 users? Dumb, dumb, dumb.
