High Quality GIF Transparency?

I've had trouble with getting any GIF's I create to be high enough quality for web usage. I know that PNG's aren't supported (without a lot of script) in IE6, so I won't bother with that until IE6 is gone.

My images when made in Photoshop come out very un-anti-aliased looking. I assume that I may have to do this manually when exporting into a GIF? If so, how would one go about this?

GIFs aren't very good for gradients. They are best for solid blocks of color. So depending on what kind of images you are trying to save as GIFs, you might not be able to get a very clear image. When you are done making your graphic, go to "Save for Web". In the optimization area to the right, choose GIF, but put the colors up to 256 colors. That should give you the clearest image you can get in a GIF.

When you do Save for Web for a GIF, make sure that you are specifying a MATTE color, otherwise your images will have the jaggies. The matte color should be the same color as the background the graphic will sit on.
