Hi friends

I have read at many places that to redirect a long affiliate url, one html file can be prepared and placed in the website root directory. I have few affiliate links. My questions are:

1. Does each affiliate url requires a separate html file with meta-refresh

or

Is there a way to put more than one affiliate urls in one single html file.

or

can i put 10 different affiliate url meta-refresh files in one separate folder?

2. What is the best way to cloak an affiliate link. I read elsewhere on the internet that php is the best way. I am not a programmer. Can someone kindly help me with a template script and guide how about php?

I have read about it on the net but can't figure out the correct way.

If some one senior sincerely addresses these questions, it will be a great help not only to me but to hundreds of others also.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Netter,

I cloaked an affiliate link by using redirection on the server side. For example, I wish to cloak http://www.google.com.
So I generate a random link, let’s say: http://domain.com/123 and assigned the id ‘123’ to google.com.
So when users click on http://domain.com/123, I do a search on the id in the database and redirect to google.com!

You can find an online demonstration here: http://netraits.com/features/cloak-url

On some websites, I've noticed, there is not a link displayed at all on the status bar that the ad is directing users too. I would rather have my ads show no link whatsoever than have one be mydomain.com/amazon even. Is this at all possible or is it a completely different ad code?

Most browsers do block changing the status bar text though.

Well that isn't very helpful then! Take Backpacker.com as an example. It may be different than the ads on your computer, but when you rollover the ones displaying on my page, no link appears in the status box. I want this!

No actually in Chrome no status bar appears like it isn't a link, but it's clickable like a link. Must just be different ads we are seeing. I'm seeing ones about a Spot GPS Satellite beacon. But no worries, it's not a big deal to me. I just don't link visitors seeing the link "http://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=ml&ti=36873&pw=31163" when they rollover my ads.

Then "mask" them using a "jump" page see post #3

That will look like (and be) a link to your own site.

Ya if I can't figure out how to have no link display, I might as well do that. I'll probably use the php example. Do you think it really makes a difference to visitors though?

Nope!

The average user doesn't even look at URLs anywhere, ask the average Internet user to tell you the address of the page they are looking at and their next question will be "How do I find that out"?

We, the Internet "Power Users" make a huge overestimation on just how savvy people really are.
Certainly it is changing and so many of the under 20 age group who have grown up with the Internet are a little more clued up, but a very large proportion of over 20-25 people have little or no idea. They have learned that they can find things on search engines but little beyond that.
Time after time after time I have seen people who type a URL they have just heard on the radio, seen on T.V. or read in a magazine or flyer into the search box at Google or Bing/Live/msn (think I'll just call it BLM from now ) sometimes even Yahoo! and look to see if the page that comes up is what they thought it might be.

Don't assume the general public have any interest whether the URI looks Ok or not because for the most part they really haven't!

Did YOU look at URLs before you ran a website?

You are right. I don't look at URLs on purpose, but I do tend to notice them. But I guess I will spend my time on more important things than changing simple URLs that most won't notice or care about. Thanks for the help! And I like the BLM
