Hi.........

I'm in the process of building a web site (we sell computers) and the owner is interested in using affiliate links as a way to generate some income and maybe jump start too. I have not used affiliate programs in the past.

Does anyone have, or know of some general guidelines (like maybe "do's & don'ts") when affiliate building? Like quantity, focus, relationship to the current site, for example. The owner is thinking about creating a separate web site just to focus on affiliate links..............but I'm having a real problem in understanding how that could generate any traffic on it's own. It seems to me that to be successful, any affiliate program must pivot on an existing already successful web site.

Thoughts would be appreciated!!

yes true, in order to get hits you must advertise yourself.
Do this: tell every single person you know about your website, those people you tell will tell other people adding traffic to your site.

Use affiliate links with other people, to do this just try e-mailing sites telling them you wish to affiliate with them. Also place a link in your site that says "affiliate with us" that way when webmasters go to your site they can be able to affiliate with you if they wish to do so.
to make that link just put something like Affiliate with Us
and then you can explain to users to place a text link to their site, linking to you of course.

you can also place another post here at webmaster-talk, under the all the rest and link swaps forum. Say you wish to affiliate and you would like some help. I bet people will immediately want to affiliate with you. Just ask for their site, and review it. If it looks good then affiliate with them.

Another way to aget more hits is if you have a newsletter or something, you can place ads there and you will get even more hits with a newsletter.

Also search engines are another good way to get hits, submit your site to search engines and watch your site grow with visitors.

Another good way is to affiliate with other Computer Related businesses, like a hosting company or something, post in the affiliate forum that you would like some help and wish to affiliate with a Computer Related site.

Those are some suggestions i just though of, i hope that helps

IMO, there are lots of sites with just affiliate links and all they want are random sales. It usually doesn't seem professional when they are used in that manner. I would suggest using affiliates, but not for the content of a site.
