Cheers for the advice Bryan. I've used Adwords before with little joy. The keywords I was going after were too expensive (I guess I know why now).

Quick question while I'm here. If you were going after the phrases "blue widget" and "blue widgets" would you have two campaigns running. For example one like

best blue widget
online blue widget
blue widget sale

and then one with

best blue widgets
online blue widgets
blue widgets sale

how bout not stopping your campain if things are not working out or your conversions rates are below 1%

if you using adwords and not getting good opt-in rates / conversion rates (on a one page sales page) then you waisting your time.

cancel campaign fix up your headlines, subheads, copy, bullet points, information, colours, layouts.....and try again.

if you spending huge amounts of money per click you want to make the most of if......otherwise you might as well go flush some money down the toilet right now.

test and tracking your sales....then testing again.

I have done this and have been able to double profits.

good ole john reese....(superstar of IM) has a strategy where by you test something - use it as a control. If it works....try to make it better. Then test it again. If you get less sales go back to your first control test. If you get more sales, use that and try to work on it and make it better.

when you are paying for google adwords you want to get the most bang for you buck. Test on smaller scale....then when things are working add more keywords and go over to yahoo PPC and msn PPC and expand it to the edge of the earth and you will make some good coin.

Any tips on how to generate a good list of keyword phrases for an Adwords campaign? That's the part that I find most difficult.

The keyword tool provided by Google isn't comprehensive enough.

Turn off content matching. Many adwords newbies people forget to do this since it is the default setting.

This end up in a lot of wasted clicks.

have a look at the sites your competing against and use the same keywords....you sometimes find the most simplest keyword that are overlooked are getting some good searches every month.

There are some good pay programs that will find such key words but there are some other one that I make use of like the SEO tools one. FREE of course.

Your quality score is increased when the page that your ad goes to when it is clicked, has first and foremost your common keywords, and secondly your secondary keywords in the content of the page within the recommended keyword density % (which is 2-8% - anything lower is non-relevant, anything higher can be considered spamming and negatively effect your quality score).

So that said, the more keywords you stuff into your adgroups the higher risk you run of them being non-relevant. Non-relevant targeted keywords negatively affect your quality score. Once again: lower q.s. equal higher cpc.

additional note: have the common keywords in your adcopy and also in the advertised url will increase your quality score (besides the point, but nice to know).. Like this:

I'm guessing this guru you speak of is attempting to achieve as many click as possible.. not regarding CPC, otherwise his theory is simply wrong. Another thing could be that Mr. Holdaway wrote this before the changes made to Google, which really hit even the most seasoned marketers hard (i.e. going from a $.55 cpc to a 5.00 cpc overnight). There are still marketers even today who do not fully understand the changes Google has made regarding quality score.

So too answer you question, in my experience with the new system, 25 targeted, relevant, keywords per adgroup performed the best as well as have a considerably lower cpc. Therefore keyword stuffing is not a good practice.

There are other sites / tools you can use:

www.ovtkeywords.com
www.spyfu.com

These will help you to build more solid keyword lists.
