I think this is an interesting topic.
How do you define your niche?
This is the most important step in the whole process of building and developing your business.
In order to define your niche you need to have something clear. It's, you are going to work with your mind. Then clarify and open it.
What is your opinion?

It helps a lot if you actually have "expertise" in a given field.

I think that's it's key to have a list of Unique Selling Points (USP's).
USP's are items that you do (or intend to do) better than anyone else.
These points can be small, but they must exist.

in defining your niche, it's useless to do anything u're not familiar with or enjoy doing it. just find your talent to do what u are good at.

This is a good way to define your niche (it Works for me)
You have to be relaxed and quite, then put your mind to work.
Take a piece of paper and a pencil.
Ask yourself:
- Who you are.
- What you know.
- What you want.
- Where you are financially and physically.
- What you are good at.
-What you love.
- What your abilities are.
- Ask people about you.
-What do you want to be known as.
Break down every question in different points.
Example:
What you are good at - all your skills (selling - what and how?,negotiating - what and how?, teaching - what and how?).
Another example:
Ask people about you (to your family, friends, neighbors, people that work with you, people you know that live in other countries).Ask to everybody about you.
Add to the list all the information you get and keep adding every day.
You have to list all the elements you think have value.Write everything down.
Because your mind will be providing you information and you have to capture it. Go as deep as you can.
Develop the power to pay attention or to “notice things”. The mind is full of a number of things; you have to keep some one thing at the focus of your mind, and that in doing so you must continuously ignore other mental contents.
An example of paying attention and focusing is Thomas Edison, he was so absorbed in work that he neither eats nor sleeps.
You must see all your value and power.
You have to know everything about you, every single detail is important. Analize and identify all the elements you think have value.
Now you have to figure out how to use all this value you possess. How to benefit from it.
Well, you have to know how to help other people. Look outside of you, try to see what people are looking for, how you can solve their problems.
Solving problems are good opportunities.Think how you can create an excellent service.
You have to be able to see the opportunities presented to you. Choose and pick up them and identify the easiest and instantaneous because you think can work. There is always an opportunity, and you have to get it.
Don’t be afraid, you have to act as if it’s impossible to fail. Believe in you, in your service, in your value, in your power.
Think how you can transform the negative factors in positive, in this way you’ll achieve experience and you’ll grow.
You have to concentrate your attention in all this elements, then decide what is your niche.
Defining your niche is your first step and this is a progressive process, developing your focus takes time. Take it easy.
Once you think you are ready, start! Don’t wait until your business is perfect, just begin and day after day you’ll improve it.
If you choose a wrong niche, you are going to fail.
Build a plan.
Study every thing carefully.

That's very good advice!
I have my 2c though. I have a problem with the singular word niche if you are talking about affiliate marketing (I'm assuming you are since it's in this forum).
What I mean by that is, one can focus on more than one niche, and I believe you are leaving a lot of money on the table if do not explore other niches. A little known secret is that you can establish yourself as an expert in any field with just a little work. Example:
I used to promote a product called pregnancy without pounds ($26/sale). This is an e-book that teaches to-be mothers how to keep off the pounds when they are pregnant. I was by far no expert in the field of pregnancy (as you can imagine).. but it was simple to become one, and not just a liar who says "ooh this e-book is great" just to sell it and really know nothing about it..
I devoted a little time, found a couple forums for to-be mothers, did a little research on pregnancy, established myself on the forums and made some quality posts with real, helpful information. Of course, I expected something in return
Next step was to make a thread, as a new mother, asking about this e-book "pregnancy without pounds"... not surprising, 3-4 people in each of these forums had actually read the e-book.
Now this serves two purposes:
1. You can milk these people that are experts in this field (as far as reading the ebook), ask them for reviews, use their quotes as testimonials (without their names).. all this is prime content for your landing page.
2. Creates interest for others who had not heard about this particular product. And it's hard to find any buying audience more receptive than new or to-be mothers.
Long story, short: You've got a killer landing page with real reviews and testimonials. Know how to set-up a good adwords campaign and guess what? The only other person advertising the keywords "pregnancy without pounds" was the merchant.. Low CPC, write some killer adcopy and I had a nice little $26/sale cash generator. Simply from, doing a day's work.
So the moral of the story:
It is good to have a niche that you enjoy and know a lot about, but if that's the only thing you're focusing on, as an affiliate marketer, you are losing out!
Spotting good niches simply comes from experience, the more research you do the more you will know and find the tell-tale sign of a hot untapped niche.
So define your 'niche' if you want to make money. Establish your 'niches' if you want to MAKE MONEY...
gl,
Bryan

Yes, of course if you are able to have "Niches" it's good, if you know how to make money from all of them it's even better. But in order to build a serious and powerful business, you have to go step by step. I think it's difficult to be concentrated in several niches. First you begin walking and then running.
If you are trying to make some money with affiliate programs it is obvious that you have to have more than one niche.

i have problems at all, to understand the whole "niche"-concept. maybe it is, because i am too oldschool and do not get the meaning of this buzzword.
business is business and there are no exceptions to the rule when it comes to internet businesses. to know your stuff makes sometimes things easier, but at the same makes it more complex.
i draw a comparison here between affiliate marketing and the stock markets.
a successful trader has two things in place, which are equally important: an entry and an exit strategy. you enter a position, when the price is low and the position seems to be profitable. you exit, when you have hit the profit margin expected or lost money.
that is the same approach i have defined for myself before deciding to do get some experience in affiliate marketing.
- search for undervalued positions (high profitability, low competition)
- max out sales
- exit when competition is rising and profitability is lowering
i even chose not to go for products to which i would be in any kind personally attached. because whatever i think, it doesn't matter: the market determines whether a product is a hit or not and not my personal preference.
i mean, i even have absolutely no influence towards the design, specifications or any other attributes of the product being marketed by myself. i just sell it, to make profits.
so, if i have defined any niche for me, than it is the "max your roi"-niche
but i guess, i got the whole idea regarding niches wrong anyways

Are you talking about affiliate marketing or product creation. Because the more I read your post the more I think your main focus is creating an online business with one or a series of your own products.
Secondly, just because you are involved in several niches, does not mean that you do not have a serious business. My business IS affiliate marketing, and to me that's serious or else I wouldn't waste my time with it.
So I guess you could so say my niche is affiliate marketing, and the products I promote are my sub niches. So I have defined MY niche.
And it simple to concentrate on several sub niches if you have the tools to do it, and I happen to.

The misunderstanding occurred because this the "affiliate marketing" board. So naturally one assumes any topic created in this board should be affiliate marketing related.
