Hi,

I read BMC's excellent post (sorry can't link to it) and thought I'd have a go at PPC. I've created a landing page for my site and created an adwords campaign.

My questions are around cost per click and finding keywords for my campaign. How do you find a good choice of keywords to target for a reasonable cost?

I'm finding that my main keywords are pretty expensive ($1+ a click) so I'm not generating too much traffic from those as I tend to be shown fairly low down.

All advice appreciated.

If you are just learning try to keep your cost below .1 a click or .05 would be even better.

Learn from a lower amount, then move up. You will loose money before you figure out how (or if) you can make money. Not all programs can make a profit.

Take it slow and watch your money like a hawk.

Good Luck,

Michael

With adwords, it's hard to get clickthroughs if you bid really low, so I recommend bidding high and watch your conversion rates. After that, adjust your bid accordingly to break even.

If you generate a high CTR, eventually adwords will lower your CPC and increase your positioning, thus making you a profit.

There's still an issue of the quality that you'll need to figure out...

Hi Spondishy,

I'm glad to be of some help to someone. So you are following the guidelines, which means you are on the right path. The next thing you should know about is relevancy and Google's recent change to their algorithm which now incorporates landing page quality into an an advertiser's quality score. If your keywords are not relevant, Google is going to slam you with those $1+ minimum bids.

As long as you are not making the mistakes found in my post you mentioned, next you should be well versed on how to create relevant adcopy along with an optimized landing page.

One of our writers (Arthur Moredrose) at Affiliate-Inter.net has written a nice article on Google's recent changes and has provided some relevancy guidelines you should be following. Check it out here.

Try these tips out and see if you can get some of your minimum bids down.

Cheers,
Bryan
