I ran a price comparison site last year.. and it was a complete disaster. But I learned alot from the experience and this year I'm actually successful on my new sites. So I wouldn't say it was a worthless experience.
First of all I signed up as an affiliate for multiple sites that sold the products I wanted to compare.
Second.. I decided to put each product in by hand. This was my first mistake, because it took a crazy amount of time.
Third .. when I burnt out on putting stuff in by hand.. I talked with my coder guy and we decided getting product feeds from the sites I sold for would take care of the data entry and I could focus more on marketing the site.
Several of the sites promised feeds, not a single one delivered.
So basically I shut the site down because I couldn't keep it updated.. BUT.. I came up with a good alternative.
One store / supplier always outsold the others. No matter what. All my commissions were coming from that one store. Luckily for me, that site provided 'premade' affiliate stores for their affiliates. So I made my own store through that and pointed the price comparison site url to it. So all my traffic went to it now.
This year I'm in the black instead of in the red, and this has turned out to be my 'happy ending' to a doomed site.
My advice would be.. if you really want to make a price comparison site, then see who will give you product feeds.
Also hire a coder, you will need one.
As for technology.. I ran mine on postnuke successfully. I altered one of their shopping cart modules to do what I wanted. Taking out the checkout and allowing the shoppers to follow the affiliate links.
It all worked well, its just the data entry that killed me.
Good luck and I hope this has helped you!
