Hey peeps! Been signing up to a few affiliate schemes recently, but I keep seeing individual policies mentioning bidding on keywords or similar phrases/misspelled company names. Can someone explain to me what this means?

Well, why would that company want competition for it's specific keywords and phrases it's using in it's PPC project; it's really cut and dry to see why they do this. This also prevents issues with trademark and copyright issues.

Right... doesn't quite explain what it is? Do you mean if your site shares the same key words?

What Steven said, and it's to avoid things such as;
http://www.searchengineguide.com/senews/005384.html

and depending on how you set your adwords campaign up
eg: If you are setting the landing page to be on the parent site with your affiliate ID, it could be seen as "double serving"

Why would the parent company want competition for the phrase they are advertising on?
It only drives the click price upwards. With a few hundred affiliates targeting the same phrases it would very quickly become a bidding war with the very people who are selling YOUR products.
