Need to increase my site earnings, how though?

Hi, My site is www.learn-how-to-weld.com

Now people say they make X amount of money from adsense and X amount from selling as an affiliate. Cool but....

I'd like to sell some kind of ebook, or something on my site that is related to what my site is about. But there is nothing really to sell that is worthy. There are two things on clickbank but thats all. And they look dodgy as...

I think that there is not enough interest in my topic for there to be anything to sell.

Is my site too new, not good enough or is my topic not popular enough to get enough traffic to make it more profitable?

What does everyone think?

Thanks,
Peter

A quick check at wordtracker showed me some results on welding terms. The keywords you are chasing "learn how to weld" don't seem to have a great number of searches. If you were to go after "introduction to welding" or "basic welding" you could increase your traffic. Obviously thee have higher competition but there are a lot of other terms with much better traffic possibilities.

Keyword Searches

basic welding 1170
introduction to welding 1093
how to weld 74
welding training 48
how to mig weld 48
welding course 46
welding careers 43

Other issues to consider would be:
  • Move your Google ads around a bit. Above the fold and top/left tend to do better (the Adsense area of Google has some great info on this)
  • Change the color of your Google ads do the title matches the link text in your page. The ads you have on your site have Google ads with a lighter blue.
  • I would suggest you make deals with local suppliers of welding equipment for advertising AFTER you get your web traffic up. Maybe a lead generation deal where any client you send them who purchases product you get a commission. A form on your site where they fill out info would be a good way of tracking clients.
Just a few ideas.

Hi Seolman,

basic welding 1170
introduction to welding 1093

I do have a few pages that are:
/mig-welding-basics-1.html
/mig-welding-basics-1.html
/mig-welding-basics-1.html

So hopefully that covers that for now.

So with the google ads, make all the text in the adds black to match my text. Is that what you are saying?

And you say move that adds around a bit, top left above the fold. Does that include getting rid of the ones either side of hte page ie the skyscrapers?

Sit has been up for, well this is the 7 month. Last month I had 2611 unique views and total 18005 pages viewed. I dunno if that is good or bad as some sites would get that in a day.

But my niche is different to every other persons niche.

OK I'll help you attack this a bit from a site monetization perspective.

Not necessarily. You have to confirm if these pages are truly "optimized" for these keyword phrases and drawing in traffic. I suggest you consider having pages specifically targeted to these themes, example:

/introduction-to-welding/mig-welding-basics.html
/introduction-to-welding/next-topic-here (etc)

Not really. I'm suggesting you change the title text of your Google ads to match the same blue you use in your Headers in your site. I'm also suggesting you reposition the ads to be on the top and left hand side of your site. Check out this Google primer for a more detailed explanation on how to properly set up your Google ads for maximum results.

You are right about the traffic issue but it's really more about traffic quality. If 100% of your visitors are finding your site from typing in search phrases such as "introduction to welding" you may get a lot higher revenue stream than from those that find it for other terms. Only time will tell.

I suggest you study your competition more deeply. Review other welding sites and see how they are set up. Do some "who is" lookups on their domain names - this may give you some indication of how long the site has been around. There's an interesting site http://www.archive.org/index.php where you can look up how a site looked many years ago. This will let you see who has been around for a while. You can see how your competition has changed the look and feel of their site around. It gives you the advantage of seeing what they did to make things work.

Have fun.

I agree with seolman advertising suggestions. Your main focus should be how to get quality traffic to your website. If you have some spare money, you also could try paid advertising like PPC. Giving away a free ebook is another opportunity to promote your website. This way you will also collect data of your visitors. Maybe you are able to write your own ebook.

Earnings come from traffic. Traffic comes from keywords. Make keyword research for your site using Adwords keywords tool or nichebotclassic.com. find the best keyword that match your site but have low competitors. Then when you have good traffic, customise your ads with high CPC ads but dont select ads that is not related to your site niche or you might get no click at all. 1 or 2 non-related channel per advertisement might be ok. You should also be creative with site layout and ads positions. Put the ads where people would click them. Just ask yourself for the best ads positions. You can also join affiliate programs such as clickbank, commission junction, etc. but choose advertisers that suit your sit because these affiliate ads are fixed. Same advertiser ads might be displayed on your site for a period of time. For your welding site, perhaps choosing welding tool maker, metal manufacturers, or education facilities might be suitable to be affiliates.
