I think there are only a few affiliate marketers who make the big $ who go public, I know quite a few guys who make in excess of $100,000 a month but keep very quite about it. a good affiliate marketer can really make money from any product, but they will tend to go with merchants who have strong conversion rates. Gambling is still a big industry as affiliate marketers benefit from repeat commissions/lifetime value of a customer. Techniques used to drive traffic do vary, some of the bigger players will use PPC but then this is a higher risk strategy and you need to know what you are doing! A great way is blogging, content sites and article writing - again focus is on unique content here but extremely cost effective for the returns you will make. I would say start looking at the affiliate networks and see which programs have high EPC (earnings per click) this will help indicate programs worth looking at.
