Like w3bmaster said. It pretty much depends on the quality of the product you are trying to sell and the quality of the traffic you send them. My visitors don't go visit my sites looking to click on a link and buy something, so I find the best success comes from finding out what the visitors are likely pick up as an impulse buy. You need to dangle some candy in front of them to get them in the buying mood.
Some niches have better impulse shoppers, and so if you have the traffic to send at the right campaign you can do well, but that doesn't mean you only want to focus on the easy buck.
When it comes down to it work on finding that quality program and work on promoting it. Try different things and when you find something working well push it more.
