At the beginning of 2010 I did some analysis on Social Media as we were ramping up our Social Media at IKROH. What I found was really quite interesting because at that time you couldnīt move on the Internet without someone mentioning twitter (that hasnīt changed much).
What was interesting was that a trend analysis showed Facebook growing at an even higher rate than twitter (this was UK specific) and also that Twitter had much much lower traffic levels when normalised against Facebook traffic.
What we took from this was the people go on Twitter to talk about them selves, their services and or products etc, rather than to really look for anything. Of course tweets that you get will find you if you chose to follow someone and that is quite targeted. It was apparent that Facebook was a much more browsed site than Twitter.
Both sites have their uses and effective Social Media Marketing (SMM) can be done on both sites. I personally really like the ability to drill down your demographic in the targeted advertising on Facebook.
So I donīt think there is ever a clear answer to which is best, it depends on your criteria and requirements.
