Making money on Gaming sites?

Hi,
Please move this thread if its in the wrong place!

Anyway, here goes. I am the lead designer at a very popular online entertainment site, www.clubskill.com. We get hundreds of thousands of page views each month, and have a steady flow of around 20,000 unique visitors per month. We have very good relationships with major gaming companies such as Sega and and DigitalJesters who regularly provide us with 'freebies'. We've recently been working on a new website design which allows for more usability, flexibility and advertising. We have been, in the past, a completly non-profit organisation but I was hoping we can start to steer into the direction of profit, so that the staff and the contributors can all get a bit of cash into their pockets for all the hard work they put in. What Im really trying to get at is what sort of things should I try to implement that would get us money. For example, we have a bit of space for advertisements...where should I look for them? (e.g. I dont want Adsense etc because a) Everyone has them/seen them b) They dont look professional on a gaming site! )

We're really trying to go up in the world, and to do so we need income.

Any ideas?

Hi,
Have you tried joining an affiliate program and placing links to affiliate vendors who sell games and systems?
I would think that you could generate some good commissions.
I am just learning about affiliate programs, but it seems like a good way to go.
Checkout cj.com or http://www.linkshare.com
Try to find an affiliate who sells merchandise that suits your site.

Good luck
Scott

I just looked at your source code.
I have a question.
How do you get so many visitors with so little SEO on your site?
Am I missing something?

Thanks
Scott

No, I think you saying stuff like that without getting your facts right is not a very good thing to do. The site www.clubskill.com has been around for over a year. Word spread around, gaming sites linked to us, and our excellent coverage of events sent traffic flooding in. We havent had the need for SEO work, simply because the site became popular through quality content. We managed to get some excellent relationships with major game companies that also sent traffic flooding in.

I suggest you dont make accusations like that before you know the facts.

For those that have games sites, we manage a site for basically and main topic is games but in general is an internet community. http://www.outwartips.net you can check out what ad`s are there and may be can help you deciding which company to earn money.

Russellclow,
You might look into my "introduction" post on the affiliate intro page. Our program "PartyPoker" is related to gaming - people can play for free or real money. In addition to our excellent and easy to sell product you get paid $65-$75 per player you refer to us. You can track them using a unique bonus code.

Check it out. We have hundreds of affiliates doing EXTREMELY well.

Thanks,
Ron Harrahs

Hi Russellclow,
I suggest you try promoting poker sites. These Affiliate programs are really paying off for me so far. I have been at it for about 3 months now and have seen pretty good results with No problems getting paid by the Affiliate programs I have been running. I don't have near the traffic you say you have so I would expect that it should not take long for you too see some profits. All the poker site that I promote are free to join so a lot of players will download, Then if they do play for money you get paid.
1. Always Choose revenue share for Poker site because poker player are very loyal to a site + You get paid by the rake Not you players losses!!! I have more info http://pokernuttz.com/AffiliatesPrograms.html and all the affiliate program I trust listed as well. Good Luck If you Have any Question Please free to e-mail me I would be happy too help get going. check out my site I have info about the Poker Affiliate programs

I really disagree with you guys.
Poker won't do the trick because these users come for free games and are usually below the legal age for gambling.

Adsense won't work because the sites are not really text based.

Try normal CPC based advertising firm with auto optimising. That works best for small sites.

PM me if you need a list

I don't know. The average age of gamers has been going up quite a lot as Gen X gets old. Supposedly the average age of a person who buys video games now is 30. You probably have a lot of 20-somethings too. I bet the people who have put poker ads on their game sites are doing fine. Of course, I don't think I would do that with the game site I plan to build, simply because I'm not sure I want to promote gambling. But if I did, I expect it would be a fine moneymaker.
