I have a free website thru tripod and I'm wondering what affiliate programs would be okay with that. (I look on their terms and conditions, some mention it others do not.) I'm also wondering if tripod would be ok with having banners and such on my website.

I think you've already made a good start by looking at the TOS or TOU with the affiliate companies. Keep looking, because that's the surest way to find out what they will allow. If you're unsure, you may want to ask them.

As for Tripod, you may want to check out their TOS/TOU. I've seen plenty of Tripod sites that have lots of banners and ads, but it's best to check with them first.

Most free web hosts are okay with putting ads on your site, but you should be careful as the hosts often put their own banners ads on your site as well, and having too many banners can look very bad. It's best to use a free host such as freewebs, which doesn't put forced ads on your site.

As for finding advertisers to fill your inventory, I think most CPA ad networks are okay with free hosted sites, but it would be very difficult to get a CPM network to accept you.

freewebs.com are quite reliable and there are quite a few really good ones as well. but you need to search for this.
