Hi All

I'm building an intranet for my company. We are a network hardware reseller. We get lists of part numbers by email and we need to match those part numbers to our stock list. The only problem I have with this is getting the emailed lists out of Outlook 2003 automatically into a MS access file, say about every 30 minutes I can then use a VBS to do what I want with it.

Does anybody know a way to do this. I'm using Dreamweaver CS3 ASP classic (for now) and Outlook 2003. Are there any books or ready scripts out there ?

Thanks in advance

Bob

Slipstick are about the best resource I know for Outlook tools / addons, see if there is anything there that fits the bill.

Otherwise you are going to need a desktop solution because ASP has no means of looking at a users email folders.

IF you are using Exchange as a mail server you may be able to set up OWA and have some ASP code that logged into a mailbox, and there are a few applications that can read data from Exchange servers.

Hi chrishirst

Hmmm. Yes thats what I was comming up against. Just did some more searching and came at it another way. You can link Access directly to the pst file and create a live MDB file for any folder.

All you have to do is open access then use the menu bar and open a new file, then chosse the outlook file type . You get full access to your local Outlook PST

Finally got it

Been looking for this for ages

Thanks for your info. I'm thinking of getting Sue Moshers book anyway

You could use Visual Studio and .NET for Office and make very short work of it. This could be an intranet server application, a desktop app, a Windows service, or anything else you need.

Yea !!!

Just got VS 2005

Found out VS 2008 just came out

Got AppDev tutorials for 2005 and going through them !!

It's all a bit different to DW and ASP !!

Very interesting though.. I give myself 6 months before I can do anything useful

The Boss wants it NOW !!!

Sure, but logic like that is why you're still waiting to pick up a technology that came out in the year 2000 when it's now 2008. When it's technology that would actually help you get tasks like this done more quickly and easily - I'd recommend .NET.

I'm saying this because the Office VS stuff is the same as any other .NET code, and lets you get the stuff done without having to research, learn, and code against new 3rd party apps every time the boss asks you for something. Not because I'm trying to be a jerk. I think ASP Classic is like rubbing 2 sticks to make fire, and that's a painful thing to do when you're cold and need some heat.
