If you want to learn a scripting language, stay away from dreamweaver. You won't learn a thing.

As for wich to go for, it all comes down to a matter of preference really. Having a VB background will make it extremely easy for you to go with ASP, so I'd suggest that first.

Don't do PHP because everybody else is doing it. ASP is just as good as PHP. That's something you can learn once your comfortable with ASP.

To learn ASP start by manual coding (I use notepad). Do not use dreamweaver or any tools that will make you dumb (You can use it if you already an expert). Start by searching "ASP Tutorials" in google.

Yes you will.

If you want to...

It's worth using if you have access to it. You will still learn stuff if you want to learn it. Dreamweaver just makes certain tasks easier, how you use it is up to you.

If you come from a VB background, it might also be worth looking as ASP.NET. There's a big thread of info about it on here somewhere.

Hi,

I agree with the above comments, it's a matter of preference.
I think you will battle trying to develop anything significant using notepad. Although it is possible, it would be a lot easier in a development environment like visual studio.
I would also suggest that if you are going to develop a site that has a back end, use ASP.NET instead of ASP. I think you will find it a lot easier and a lot more powerful.
There are plenty of tutorial on ASP.NET to get you going.
Try search Google.

Good luck,

Mark.

Yes ASP is a good thing but the new ASP.NET is even better.
My advice would be to start with ASP.NET.

You can of course start with Notepad but there is some new free web development tools for ASP.NET. WEBMATRIX and Visual Web Developper 2005 Express Edition. The lates one is from Microsoft and its free. Just try it. Here under are the links for you to download them.

Crimson Editor is nice for PHP, ASP and more. I am a fan.

From the website
Quote:
Syntax Highlighting for HTML, C/C++, Perl, Java, Matlab and LaTeX. Also, it can be extended for other programming languages based on custom syntax files.
While it can serve as a good replacement for Notepad, it also offers many powerful features for programming languages such as HTML, C/C++, Perl and Java.
