ASP and PHP are two different ways of doing the same thing. mySQL is a database and has nothing to do with ASP or PHP.

ASP is microsoft's technology and only runs on Windows servers. With ASP you can write code in a few differint languages such as VBScript, PerlScript, or Jscript.

You can do a fair bit with classic ASP... it is my scripting language of choice and I use it to interface with Amazon's Web Services and my MySQL database. Feel free to have a look at my site to see what I've done with it over the years. Granted, I've not worked on the site in a while - but it's all done in ASP.... not found time to go down the .NET route yet and while the new servers are backwardly compatible with ASP I have no intention to dabble in the framework as it were.

I got myself a copy of Visual Studio .NET a few weeks ago and picked up a C# book, havn't sat down to learn it yet though. I'm comfortable with classic ASP and like Tiggy stated, I'm not ready to move yet. I create inetclubhouse.com myself, all done in classic ASP.

.NET seems to be the way to go, If your just starting out you should probably learn that as classic ASP will eventually be obsolete.

I highly reccomend going down the .NET route as quickly as possible... it's an awesome environment to work in. I love being able to write Windows apss in it too. I picked it up pretty quick, I've written an installer for our product (file copying, registry changes, environment variables, file permissions, ADSI changes to configure IIS, create new users, etc) before I even attempted Hello World. Entirely in Notepad Don't need Visual Studio...
