Hello all,

My boss has asked me to put my website on CD.
My first response was. "You cannot do this without major re-coding"

Now that i think about it. I am wondering.
Can this be done? Can this be done to be viewable off the CD?
I am running SQL and have about a 3000 page website.
You would need iis running off the machine locally, correct?
Can you connect to a database on a CD?

Sorry about the long and scattered post.
Thanks in advance.

Bluko.

The only way I can think of is to put a setup file on the CD which sets up IIS with the site, installs MSDE (slimmed down version of SQL Server) and imports the data. It wouldn't run off the CD though...

I think I've heard of programs you can use to run dynamic content off a CD, not sure of the names of any though (anyone else know?), and you could import your SQL data into Access... although that could be a mission depending on the database complexity...

That's not an easy task to do. You might run into some file attribute problem. I meant the rights. What is your boss thinking about?

Doesn't the connection string in ASP have to be a fully-qualified path? In that case, it would only ever work under a single drive letter.

Thats what i was thinking.

My boss really doesn't have a clue when it comes to website admin.
He just doesn't grasp the point that there are limitations to what can be done on the web.

I work for a certain Canadian government department, which has 100's of missions around the world. The site I run is a tech support site for these missions.
Some missions have brutal bandwidth or at times some doent have any connection at all.
Therefor my boss asked me for an offline version of the site.

I would insert the URL yet it is an intranet behind a firewall not accessable by the public.
Thanks for you help.
I guess I will give him the big "NO" and hope he leaves it at that.
Cheers mates!

Another thing to consider, Bluko, is the fact that IIS would have to be configured to see the site on the CD -- it definitely would not be what your boss is envisioning in that you could just pop the CD in the drive and the user could just navigate to it and have access to the site. Wouldn't that be nice?

I would think you should sit down and formulate a plan to avail all the information in the database in another form on the CD. Maybe as a desktop application written in Java, VB, etc.?
