Does anyone know the market share of these two operating systems in regard to servers online.
Im thinking linux is bigger but I maybe wrong.

Linux is more widespread amongst small business and personal sites because it's free and opensource.

Windows tends to be usded more with larger corperations because it's backed by a large corperation.

This is all changing though as linux gains more and more popularity, Although ASP.NET is helping with the Windows share of the market.

It basicly all comes down to your personal preference in the end. What experience do you have? Do you need MSSQL or use of ActiveX controls? Windows will run anything Linux can, but linux is more flexible.

I can see this thread turning into an IE/Firefox; Intel/AMD debate

win verus linux well i would take linux over win do to the fact IIS is like chesse
and has alot more holes then linux even though linux is open source but the biggest thing that is holding linux back from more work stations is do to the fact not many apps are being ported to linux but what is cool is that nero just released a version of nero for linux
and by the way if your talking about server wise dont you mean unix ?

Linux is more widespread because it is free. Naturally, most hosting companies would rather not pay for licenses. But both are good

linux is by far the better server os (asides from unix) i had a website on a win 2k3 webserver and had it secured to specs and it was hacked and killed within 2 days of being online. my *nix server is still online! not hacked at all (well people tried but no luck.)

But if your running windows dont use IIS get apache (the same webserver that *nix uses) it will require a little set up for install but is it far more stable.

Again, see http://www.webmaster-talk.com/showthread.php?t=26495

Don't beleive the hype. Windows has great server software that is easy to use, secure, easy to support, and caters for all your needs.
Look at it this way: If you just want to get the job done, use Windows. If you want to sit and mess around and recompile your kernel a million times before you have something you can call useable, use Linux.

I severly doubt it was secured to specs...

My advice: Go with whichever you choose based on your needs and knowledge. You can't say which is more secure just like that. You need knowledge to make your chosen OS 'secure'. I would't go by market share alone either.
