Hi,
I am new to this forum and new to scripting, more precisely ASP.

I read this in a manual:

"The advantages of using ASP instead of CGI and Perl, are those of simplicity and speed
Provides security since your ASP code can not be viewed from the browser."

Simplicity, speed and security. Is it too good to be true? Any specialists here? Is ASP the preferred server scipting language? I have some background in C++, assembler and Simula.

But bear in mind that PHP is written by a committee and the syntax shows that, and many host are running different versions so sometimes your code will fail 'cos you're testing on 4.1.xx and the host is running 4.0.6 or lower.

There are security issues with either setup, normally cause by poor coding rather than anything else.
PHP should be easy to learn though as the syntax is very similar and in some case identical to C/C++

ASP/ASP.NET programmers often can get higher rates than PHP programmers as well.

I'd reccomend ASP.NET. It's the latest version of ASP, there's not a lot of point on beginning to learn it. You might as well go for ASP.NET seeing as it can do everything ASP can do and more. If you know C++ you should be able to pick up C# pretty quickly.

The security in ASP.NET is top notch. It does a lot for you, for example automatically validating user input for malicious code.

Excellent answers. But I have heard so much about Perl. None of you mention that. Is it out?

Uche
When I searched with php tutorial, w3schools.com was listed second on Google and when I searched with asp tutorial, it came up first, and it was from that site my cite was cut. So I think I am on the right place. I see that you are from Nigeria. Do you know of any great African portals that I can link to on the African page http://multifinanceit.com/markets/Africa/africa.htm on my site?

All of you, thank you very much for your feedback.

I have heard that ASP.NET 2.0 combined with C# is good. I was on a Microsoft seminar in Oslo, Norway and there the last version of C# was demonstrated. The productivity with acceleration keys and intellisense like solutions was impressing.

Saying ASP is less secure then PHP is nonsense. PHP, ASP, Perl, whatever... is only as secure as the person writing the code makes it. The ONLY reason why PHP tends to be preferable to ASP is the simple fact that everything about it is free, so hosting tends to be cheaper and more scripts are built on it.

When it comes right down to it, it's all a matter of preference. If you have a strong C/C++ background then ASP.net might be easy for you. You could probably pick up PHP easily with that background as well.

Perl is very much alive and strong, it's just not used so much for web development, mainly I think, because of it's complexity and partly because of security. It's used alot for "behind the scenes" type of scripting. Doing such tasks as parsing out files to fill a database and such.
