Ok so lets say i have a database of plumbers

i want to display each record on the page with a brief summary.
and then have a link to more detailed informations.

ie. Plumber 1 has 4/5 rating Link
Plumber 2 has 3/5 rating Link
Plumber 3 has 4/5 rating Link

When you click on the link you get more information about the plumber te link was attached too.
How do i do that?

Any ideas

you pass some parameter to a script, extract the relevant details then display it.

Other than that your question is a bit vague

Something like this:
<a href="more_plumber_information.asp?uniqueidentifie r=1">Plumber 1</a> - display basic info for plumber 1
<a href="more_plumber_information.asp?uniqueidentifie r=2">Plumber 2</a> - display basic info for plumber 2
<a href="more_plumber_information.asp?uniqueidentifie r=3">Plumber 3</a> - display basic info for plumber 3

chrishirst is right, though. Your question is a bit vague.

sorry i'll try to be more detailed.

My friend is designing a site that people will use to rate service people in their area that they have uesr. such as builders, mechanics and so on.

They will enter there postcode and what they are looking for. so for example

post code al5 1EW and builders.

The page will then display a list of builders including their name and rating out of 5.

What my friend wants is then to be able to click on any one in the list and see more information about them.

How do i have a button that will show more detail about the record?
is detailed enough as i'm not sure what more to say

or are you looking for the backend code as well ?

http://www.asp101.com/samples/ look at the database samples.

Sorry for all the questions but i've not heard of this uniqueidentifier before.

Is it HTML or ASP or something else?

so i sent the informtation using something like

<a href="more_plumber_information.asp?uniqueidentifie r=3">Plumber 3</a> - display basic info for plumber 3

how to i get the information from "more_plumber_information.asp?

the "uniqueidentifier" is simply a place holder for a querystring parameter.
It could be ?ref=1 or ?blah=1 or ?get_this_database_entry=1

you don't get the info FROM "more_plumber_information.asp" this is the page that displays the information after you have retrieved it from the database.

No problem.

And to add to what chrishirst said...I used the names "uniqueidentifier" and "more_plumber_information.asp" as guideline names only. You can name them whatever you want. I intentionally use fake querystrings in that manner to make points more legible, not as be-all and end-all code samples.

Cool beans that you got it working!

i understood that more_plumber_information.asp was just a example name and as soon as i posted the post asking what uniqueidentifier was. I had a DOh its just another example name to be used.

Its just that i got myself slightly confused with sqls uniqueidentifier field type.

but again thanks to all the help, and not mocking the stupid question lol
