I have a headache.

I work for my university as a web assistant. One of the sites I am working on needs a "discussion page". It doesnt need to be complex. I just need someone to be able to make a post and have the option for people to respond to it. I found some scripts to do this, but they all use databases. Well, working for a public university, we dont have all the technology we really need. I cant have a database on my server. I really wish I could do this with PHP, but we dont have PHP on our server and aren't allowed to put it on the server. Grrrr! Is there anyway to have a simple discussion page without a database? Can someone point me to a script or a tutorial?

You could always use one of the free third-party scripts such as www.runboard.com .

Junkyardscripts dot com has a really simple message board script that is all html file based. I only played with it briefly on their site so I can't tell you much about it.

There has to be something out there.

I couldnt get Junkyardscripts dot com to pull up (and I did enter it right, with out the spaces and a "." instead of "dot"). Maybe it is just down right now. I will try it again later. I am also checking out runboard.com right now. There just has to be a way to do this. Thanks for your help!

Ugh! How do they expect to operate a university without providing the tools?

No kidding! It is really frustrating. I have been taking my laptop to work everyday so I can have tools to build a website and make some graphics for the sites. All our computers at the university have on them is Frontpage. Thats not enough to make a decent site (imho).

Why not use Snitz Forum?
It can use an Access mdb as the data storage which, strictly speaking is only a database when running under Access, other than that, when being accessed using a scripting language it is simply a datafile with an organised structure and the SQL functionality is provided by the ODBC drivers built into Windows

That would be because I recalled the name and not the URL

It is a php script anyway.

You could alway use FrontPage

It has a no php, no DB forum funtion built in. That should be good for a chuckle or two.

As someone who has done IT work inside of universities and schools, it's rather disturbing to see some of the things that go on.

If it doesnt have to be too robust then storing the comments/discussion within a simple XML file should be ok.
