I think that by linking to only the best of the web or at least in our corner of it, we do our readers a service. Enticing them to come back. Especially if the concept of a blog is that it changes over time, maybe even every day, and people are used to coming back to check for new comments already.

If you run a PHP blog, you'll help your visitors by filling your blogroll with sites that talk about tweaking execution plans in MySQL and run tests of the InnoDB engine verses whatever else. You'll never have all the info in the world on your blog so it's ok to refer them to somewhere else they can find specialized info. If that's gonna happen anyway, you're better off showing them the way than letting them find it themselves. And I bet if you have nothing but high quality links people will come back to see your new ones.

Does anyone else take this approach? I know it's cool right now to link out in your posts but how many people use the blog roll feature?

And do you put only the site's title or do you type a description too?

I've used a blogroll before, link exchanging. It's increased my blog and the other person's blog's trafic, PR, and revenue. Blogroll is definitely the way to go. I usually put the website's title in and then add the description and the links title attribute. It seems relatively effective.

I don't even have a blogroll at the moment since I didn't want that endless list of links. I do planning on adding one again and I plan on linking to a few select blogs. The hard part is deciding which ones to link to without offending some others.

I also want to have a separate section with links to some friends sites. Again not a lot, but I'd like to give back a little to some people.

I've got a few links in my blogroll - I try not to go over the top with these though.

I've got four (including yours). I'm like whym...I don't like going over the top with blogroll links, and I don't read all that many anyway (you can look in a million different toilet bowls and you're still either going to see an empty bowl or fecal matter).
