I keep getting cigarette spam on my blog. They'll go after a 6 months old post and attack like a pack of hungry dogs. I'm really getting ****ed.

What I've been doing is to delete the link, and then publish the spammer's email at the bottom of their message. That put an end to it for about a week before they came back in force over the weekend.

Of course it's not illegal. You're simply putting an email that you know on your webserver. At least I think it's not

Anyway, what they are doing is illegal, so it's not like they are going to turn you in.

Cool! Cause it's actually been working at least a little.

Are you using Wordpress software? If so, you can just go to your Dashboard and under

Options > Discussion

You can use the "Comment Blacklist" to blacklist certain comments by words used. Three good things to blacklist are:

[url
blogspot
hotmail

The "[url" will block all those pesky spam comments trying to use BBCode and blogspot/hotmail is just a necessary block as so many spammers link back to blogspot free blogs and use a hotmail email.

If your're problem is spam with the word "cigarette", just put "cigarette" in the blacklist and Wordpress will automatically delete those comments and you'll never see them.

That could be a way to do it for the short term, but the problem would be trying to block innocent words. These people that are trying to advertise by spam try to make their spam comments look as natural as possible. This usually means that there aren't many original words in their posts.

:/

Lately, I have been using Scripts Mill with animated captcha. Not that I get any comments anyhow lol but, now that I've added this animated captcha, my spam went from 20 something a day to 1 a week.

Pretty cool!

Animated captcha, huh? That's pretty interesting! Is it against OCR software?

I wish I could stop spam in my Hotmail inbox - it seems endless some days (I signed in earlier and I'd received 14 emails, about 10 spammy ones since last time.) Hotmail never stops this - I click send to junk and the next day, the spam is the same sort of junk: "please confirm your grocery delivery", "apple macbook delivery confirmation" or "retarded spammers banishment confirmation" - no the last one is sadly a figment of my imagination and I'd expect if I clicked on it, I'd get added to the suckers list and get sent even more junk.

I hate Hotmail

If you hate it so much, why don't you use another mail system? gmail is pretty much amazing. Have you seen the new counter on the main page of their site? It's constantly going up in memory....pretty neat. The whole site is based on ajax and all of that stuff.

Can you forward mail with hotmail? Then you could just set up a gmail account and make it all forward. Or if you're getting your mail from a POP3 server, gmail works with that too.

But there's probably some sort of reason why you're not switching, so I'm probably saying all of this for no reason :P

Lol you got that right! I'm not switching because I use it for MSN most of the time - I know it's possible that you can use non-Hotmail addresses for MSN and I've done this, but my contacts all know this Hotmail address and I've registered it for all my social networking sort of things e.g. Bebo.

For everything else, I use my business email addresses (@whymhost.co.uk).
