Please forgive my newness to blogging and perhaps lack of knowledge about site promotion, but I have what to me seems like a simple question. If I create a new blog at a site like Wordpress, does it automatically get picked up by the Search Engines? Will Wordpress link to it automatically? If not, what is the best way to get my blog published?

I don't know if WordPress will automatically link to it or not, but they will ping the engines when you click publish.

You can also set up the "Latest Blog Post" feature here, and put a link in your signature. Either of those will get you indexed in less than a week. They won't be very strong for SEO purposes, but better than nothing.

I don't know but, in my experience in using blogger, my blog got indexed in Google SERP in less than 24 hours.

Yes... and No (with important considerations). I manage three WordPress CMS (Content Management System) websites, and also work with clients using same. The "Yes" part is because modern search engines go out and automatically "crawl" the web to pick up new sites and pages, and catalog them.

The "No" part of my answer is because you need to administrate and set-up your WordPress installation first -- then it will do some great SEO things automatically:

• Set up your WordPress CMS to automatically "ping" (ask for an updated listing) major services when you publish a new post. See the WordPress documentation on Pinging.
• Install and set-up the following SEO "plugins" for WordPress:

Sorry I am unable to understand where to make these changes. Will this be in wp-admin or some thing in initial installation. I have started one my own wordpress blog abiquddoos.com. Plz let me know where to do changes for this xm sitemap inclusion.

You need to set up "pinging" in the "Options>Writing"... then scroll to bottom of page and enter sites to "ping" under "Update Services."

Wordpress is a very good and very indexing-friendly engine. Google XML Sitemaps, as Scott mentioned, is a very good addon if you want Google to correctly index your site. You should sign up for an account with Google Webmaster Tools, and then submit your sitemap there. Google should index your site in just over a day after you do that.

Just add the link to your signature, and google will index your site within a few days...

That's sort of true, William.

And OSWebMaster's answer is sort of true as well. However, like most things in WordPress, a plugin isn't necessary. All you have to do to ping blog search engines is add them into the "Update Services" field in Options-->Writing.

I've written out some steps using Google Blogsearch as an example. This will automatically update Google blogsearch and seems to have an effect (although I haven't done extensive research by any means) on the "freshness" of the main index as well.

Different sites vary, some take a few days, others take months to get indexed. My first blog took about two weeks or so to get "picked up" by Google (when submitting it via Webmaster Central).

If you do register a blog for free over at wordpress.com, it's technically already a part of their large CMS, so yes, but its considered internal linking.

Depends on what you mean by "Publish". All that is required for people to access your blog is to register a domain (on your own or with WP.com, and then access is available via URL entry).
