I understand that no one is going to go as in depth as i need here, but if you could point me in the right direction i would really appreciate it.

I have been using Dreamweaver for all my website purposes for the past few months, but I feel that Wordpress is the route i need to go to create this new website... obviously... I know nothing about wordpress other than how to install it on my server.

Any comments for improvement in the design area would be much appreciated... like a color scheme... that would be great..

WordPress uses themes to control the look. You'll want to know css and while you don't need to a little knowledge of php will also be useful.

Here's the design and layout section of the WordPress Codex, which is the documentation for WordPress.

It depends on your experience, but it's not too hard to design and build a theme. WordPress also uses template_tags, which are essentially a way for you to add php functionality without having to know php.
