Look: I don't understand why people 'blog'...
What's the point of writing texts about my day or something ....
Do you people care about my day?

I don't get it

Blogging started out from people logging sites they had visited for the benefit of others then ego's, e/n culture and the quest for cash monetize your blog!!!111 mentality took over and blogging became something else which despite the grand democratisation of media reportage claims of it's proponents these days is largely just a quick way for lazy people to make websites, or a way for traditional media types and politicos to appear with it.

It really depends. People blog about a number of different aspects, not just their day to day lives. People blog about politics, technology, health etc. While it is true the majority of these sites offer nothing original, you do find the odd blogs which really do add something original to the topic.

People who do blog about their general life usually only do it for a small group of people (friends, family etc.), or they do it for a wider social group (people with certain disabilities, people in similar financial difficulties), these people are interested because they can identify with the author and hopefully learn based on someone else's experience.

Expanding on Jamie's ideas......

The original reason I started to blog was to make a little extra money during college. Now I do it also because I enjoy writing about things.

Some people also blog to make their voice heard. They have thoughts, opinions, etc. that they feel should be made known to the world.

But then there are even more people who blog for money (and only money) and write for useless reasons that don't provide value to anyone, especially the readers (those are called splogs).

Hi -

Blogging... why? Good question. I think while some are just pursuing money, the most successful have something to tell that people want to read -- and the money comes after that.

A blog doesn't have to be about your personal life. It can be about any topic, and then you become a kind of combination reporter/columnist with posts that address aspects of your "beat" (an old journalism term meaning the area you cover).

Yours -
Scott

Not particularly. And I assume no one cares about whether I made it to work on time any particular day, what I had for lunch, and petty details like that. But when you can find something that transcends 'your day' ... something that other people will be able to relate to, that's something else. Or, if your day is wildly different from most of your days.

A blog really isn't just a public diary. A lot of my posts are about a particular area - a mountain pass, national park, wilderness area - and plenty of others are photography tips. The most personal, about my day like posts I make tend to describe road trips.

Example: The Columbia River Gorge. I try to use phrases like 'your correspondent' to describe myself in a less personal way. I try to give people a sense of being there, in the text and with photos.

No doubt about that but just how many people can get their blogs famous?
It would be "more prudent" to perhaps seek alternative incomes online.

Some blogs are worth visiting more than others i know what you mean though i have seen some blogs where the author basically just talks about their day and anything else he or she wants to get off their chest rather than a particular subject but at the same time these kinds of blogs can be popular and earn the author a significant income.

I agree with Jamie.

Sometimes, personal blogs could be of an outlet to what you want to say about feelings and experiences. Sometimes, it's a passion. I have a friend who really loves to write about everything under the sun, her experiences and thoughts.

But on the other hand, some blog for money.

I originally started blogging because I read that it was a free way to increase site traffic. Blogging did increase my site traffic dramatically, but I found I really enjoyed it. It becomes a bit addictive. I read other people's blogs now as well, which prior to researching the "art of the blog", I had never read one.

Between completely messing the scripting up, switching web hosts in the next month, having changed my original opinion on some things I wrote and having some new ideas; I have decided to start mine all over again.

My grandmother is even blogging now. She has restarted hers a couple of times already. She is sharing personal experiences in her desire to have a professional writing career. Even with it being a personal blog, it is so eloquently written, people read it.

Blogging is very enjoyable to do. It's my way of expressing and sharing my thoughts and ideas to others. Aside from that, it also helps me to gain backlinks for my website.

I use the blogging software to post videos.

A lot of people that use blogging software are like me and dont use it to actually 'blog' in the traditional sense.

A lot of people use their blogging software to write articles.

For some reason, I find it really addicting and fun. Although I probably wont make much, making use of Ad Sense, there is some monetary incentive as well.

This days blog platforms used more like CMS than personal journals. They are usually indexed much faster than other types of sites so is one of the reasons people blog then to share ideas depending on the niche you choose and also for the fun of it!

Blogs are also great for companies. We use a blog as a companion to one of our sites. The kinds of posts we put up there tend to be behind the scenes and up-and-coming changes to the site. It allows members to see what's coming and comment on that in a much more relaxed and less formal fashion than might otherwise be possible.

This is why companies like Google use blogs, to reach their customers in a different and more informal way.

I've seen some blogs, Etienne Teo's blog comes to mind, that are fantastic resources for different types of sites and useful items.

A blog can be used to communicate with consumers and to-be consumers as well as inform the general public about an issue or idea.

Personally, I use a blog to connect with my "fans" and future players while my team develops our game. Also, I use the same blog to inform them of updates.

Blogs are very useful, you just need to use your brain.

I blog for fun and profit... mostly for fun tho, and about topics that I do care about.

I read others blogs to get information on specialized topics that I don't have the time or energy to research completely as well.

Always ask an expert for an opinion, you will get it, and if you have learned to trust your source, then you normally can trust their opinion.

Journalists used to have that credibility, but they have been losing ground on that for a long time now.
