Starting a blog network

I don't blog much but I have an idea of starting a blog network of a few hundred of blogs. I will be using it to post automated reviews of sites for PR and backlinks. Do you think this would be a good idea ?? What things I should keep in mind and whether free account be more effective or paid domain accounts?? Also, how to promote it?? This has been my weakest link. I just don't know howto use services as blog and ping and technorati etc. Help would appreciated.

Well, since most bloggers are all about the free stuff, I would say make it free. As far as it being a good idea, of course it is. There are several sites like this. I think your biggest problem up front would be getting people to know who you are, but that's always the tough part for anything. I think, and this is just my opinion, that as long as you let people know about it without spamming and market it in good ways, that getting people to sign up won't be too hard, just because everyone wants more traffic.
If it was me, I would use the same basic money making tools that bloggers use, that way you don't have to charge the bloggers anything, and they will be happy about that. Take any of this advice with a grain of salt though, as I have never even thought of making anything like this. I'm only spouting off what comes to mind. Good luck, and let me know if you get it going.

Yes like tribute said and to advertise just post in forums, tell friends to tell friends to tell there friends, link exchange, etc blogging networks might be one of the hardest things to own because in order to own a good blog you must post at least once every 2 days but how hard will it be to post for 20 blogs every 2 days very. but if you have the time/money go strait with it who knows you might get success full with it

You sound like your main motive in pursuing this venture is monetary. If so, then I would seriously advise some other way of generating income - because this is completely the wrong approach to blogging.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with wanting to make money from your blog. It's an investment of your time and money, but this should not be your main motivation/objective. If you set out with the intention of posting short, poorly written, ad strewn posts and making money from it then your blog is doomed to failure. I'm sorry to report that.
I would never ever consider starting an automated blog, for so many reasons. You will not end up far, and not have a single thing to be proud of if you fail (as many real bloggers do - at least they have their writing and have taken away valuable experience, all of which looks great in a CV and portfolio).
In short, no, I most definitely do not think its a good idea - sorry
If you still are determined to start your network (hell, it might actually work if you're very, very, very lucky) then I would not recommend using a free site such as Blogger, Wordpress.com etc. - this is bad for branding, reputation and freedom of creativity (design and function wise). Invest in some hosting and a domain name and install a blog system of your choice (I'd recommend Wordpress, it's free, easy and easily customized - www.wordpress.org). You can be up for the year for under $100 USD if you nose around a bit looking for the best deal.
If you'd like any more help, please do not hesitate to shoot me a PM! It's for the good of the blogosphere
Chow!

Thank you all for your great feedback. It is really useful information to me.
As regards "intention of posting short, poorly written, ad strewn posts and making money from it", it is not the exact idea.
I myself won't visit any such kind of blog. The idea here is to build do-follow blogs. It is something like article directory. People would pay for their articles to appear on my blogs. These articles will contain links to their own site, creating valuable backlinks.
Previously, I had thoght to charge for blog posts but now I got an idea from here. I like the idea of TributeK to make the posts free and instead use other forms of blog monetization.
I have my own domains and hosting so there should not be any problem with creativity. Also, all the posts would be done manually so the blogs are human readable than just SE readable.
Would like more comments on this.

Why does it look spammy to you. I already said that the posts will be original and will be manually submitted.
I am using this just as a way of monetisation. If payperpost is not spammy and a scam then I don't think my network is either.

Logic uses PPP a lot it is one of our better incoming sales campaigns that come to our software service for email marketing that converts to sales.
They have good blog members placing our advertisments/ed-vetizements.

If you'll just going start up a blog, i suggest you make it as a subpage of you website. Why? AS you regularly post articles to your blog, you are adding NEW contents to your website too. Because of this, SEs will crawl your weblog more frequently.

cool b,
IMO, the blog networks you mention will strike home, as - no matter how spammy they are - webmasters are 'dying' to use such service for PR juice and back linking purpose.
That depends on you, really - are you a pure blogger (blog not for money) or a make money online type of blogger.
It seems that your motives is money first - then a blog network is a GREAT way to make money (just the likes of forum posting, directory submission, and paid review services) - I've seen A sitepoint and digitalpoint forum member is listing his blog network for sale that earn him $700 per month - I forgot, but his requested price tag is around $15,000.
A little word of advice, add value to your service by adding more and more different C-class IPs - worth more value to webmasters.
And oh, don't use free blogging services like blogger.com or wordpress.com - more investment in your own domain names and hostings, but yield better investment return later on (nobody would pay a high price for free-hosted blogs).
Good luck on your venture!
Cheers!

Yeah, I am surely doing it for money.
A pure blogger will never start hundreds of blog for personal use. Everyone knows how much time and energy is spent in keeping a single well maintained blog.
It anyways doesn't make sense to start so many blogs for a pure blogger.
Here is one sample blog I am working on. I am trying different plugins to make my work easier. If you notice then yes the articles are PLR ones and I have not even edited them. This is a test blog so I am not concerned about anything. (I may drop the domain at the end of the day afterall, so...)
I know what some people are making out of such blogs, thats why I am intrested in this.
Adding more c-class IP's is an option as they are very costly to obtain, also that they are difficult to get. There are very strict rules on applying for more than one c-class IP's. Also, that there not many left to be assigned so the registrars are strict on allocating them.
Anyways, with your input I will try to add more IP's.
Please, keep your advices coming in
