I'm putting together a website that will have formal article posts as well as a seperate blog section with more informal quick posts.

I am considering setting up wordpress to do this by writing a plugin which won't show the article posts within the blog section but on the back end it will essentially be the same. To mark something as an article there will be an article category and the blog front page will ignore these posts.

First off has anyone done anything like this already so I don't need to get my hands too dirty with plugins?

Also can anyone see any particular problems with the idea?

I'm not sure if it's exactly the same as you are proposing, but over at WebHelperMagazine.com, we have a number of categories for articles, and also one blog, my own, which I advertise separately (OpenSourceWebMaster.com), using a separate URL. It is actually a subcategory on the overall "blog" CMS, powered by WordPress.

You could simply set-up WordPress with a category called "Articles", and also one with "XXXX-Blog" (the name of your blog), and go that route.

I've decided I'm probably gonna need a bit more that what wordpress can offer in terms of my article section so I'll roll my own. There's some promise with writing a plugin but I couldn't really get into the whole wordpress architecture for what I was planning. Small plugins seem very easy with wordpress...not sure about bigger ones.
