Might as well do it, everyone else is.

I have a fantasy football site, and my blog will be mainly fantasy football related. Should I just create the blog within the site (domain.com/blogname), or go with a new domain name? I was going to use my name but someone already took the .com version. I could get the .net still if I went this route, however.

Or, I could use another sports related domain name. I don't know why, but it seems like I should be using my actual name. This will be my first actual blog, so not sure how to approach, it, or if the name is really that important in the long run.

Mike,

You don't need a new Domain, you will be fine with what you said: (domain.com/blogname).

I am doing that with all my sites.

Also, as your site will go high in the search engine, people will visit yor site too.

I would go with the domain you already have and make it a part of the site you have since it is about the same topic.

i would suggest you to go with the www.domain.com/blog since regularly updated blog would give benefit to the site and since both are of similar topic so you should not any problem (except when you want to sell the site and keep the blog).

second I would suggest you to but the domain related to your name (.net is good) for future use, I would if i can but my name is based on a computer part :d so luck

I suggest serendipity (www s9y org)for your software. I'm using WP and Serendipity on my blogs, and its kicking WP's *** in indexing.

My problem is knowing what to say in the blog once I start. I thought about keeping a journal of my business activities, but not all my activities are as positive as the next. I suppose I could write my articles there, then copy and submit to the content sites. That would kill two birds with one stone, I think.

Mike,

Even if your name is not in the URL, you will probably want to feature it. Being quoted as an expert gives your name value beyond your blog.

enjoy

You don't need a new domain for a blog. It also helps your branding because people will see the blog as part of your domain, also when they find your blog entries in search engines.

It's all is a matter of preference. Using a subdomain, of course, was seen by Google as a separate entity much like using a new domain.

@fkj: Could you elaborate what do you mean by indexing?

Sites are "indexed" in search engines. When they send out a crawler, it looks for pages to add to thier directory. If you look at the address bar of some sites you will see short sweet address like

"http//yourblog_com/aboutme.htm"

then some like

"http//yourblog_com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=48885"

The short sweet ones are better indexed. The mod_rewrite feature on servers will help with changing those long names to short ones dynamicly. Other ways are redirection, and creating html site maps.

Search around for SEO tricks here and check out my sites in my sig for tips.

Go with a subdomain if your host allows you to like ->http://blogname.domain.com, otherwise domain.com/blogname is also fine.
I use wordpress and use a mod rewrite to make my blog post look like:
->http://blog.domain.com/posttitle.html
(This can be easily done from admin panel in wordpress.)
It's more search engine friendly than index.php?p=4344
And you can mention your name in the template design to brand it!
Bye
