Most people have no idea how to make money from a blog and think a bit of adsense will do it.

I know bloggers who are an authority in their field who still earn relatively little (less than $1000 a month) because they don't monetize on their blog properly.

Michael Arrington is where he is because:
1. He found a niche that had not been exploited and which had clear demand
2. He gets stories before anyone else
3. His blog is informative, and moreso than most competitors
4. He offers unique and insightful opinions that are often correct
5. He strikes individual advertising deals.
6. He markets his blog and makes contacts within the industry
7. His blog has a brand...
8. He posts regularly everyday - 3 posts or more.

the list goes on.

How many bloggers do you know who even do 3 of those things.

I haven't really started a blog yet...i'm still struggling with the idea of whether it's worth doing it casually for a few hundred a month, or going all out and trying to seriously monetize it...

It really is all about finding a niche, and then building up a repeat userbase. A blog that I actually have been following for quite some time is Engadget.com...they have really gone from what would have been a simple tech blog to a site that rivals PC World and the like...I would imagine that the owners pull in hundreds of thousands in ad revenue alone monthly...I just need to figure out a niche that I have experience in, can come up with material for, and has not already been done, or at least done well

What paid to post programs do you use. My BLOG is PR4 but so far no approvals.

i will give a great tip...you give garbage content and you will get garbage feedback and or sales.

you give good wholesome info with great copy and an emotional drive behind phrases to give it that extra ummphhh then you will have a winner, watch the sales and site flourish....people will direct their site to you and quote from you etc. Its the best way to get you blog up and running and popular.

I like the rational of "who he knows" and less of what he knows"

isnt this a truism for most buisness models?

creating conent that will blow the socks outta your clients and your competitors is where the money comes in.

trust me when i say ....when I do cheesy posts my sales normally dont go as well as when I give my prospect the juicy stuff they need.

The majority of bloggers would not even come close to half of what TechCrunch can make per month. Michael Arrington has an inside track within the industry, as mentioned by a few already. Another blogger with insider contacts is Om Malik of GigaOm. He can also pull in >$100,000 per month just from 'who' he knows.

It is very, very difficult to reach that level without pulling any strings in the process. That's just the reality of life.

yup true. I havent posted here a while as this topic did get me reading more about how you can syphon more profits from the blog.

since then (well lets say in the last two weeks or so) I have been using some strategies from bryan kumar web 2.0 strategies and my blog traffic and profits have actually trippled. So i think social networking is going to play a much bigger part in being successful with advertising or selling affiliate products on your blog.

they do take time to set up and wisp traffic to but its definatly worth it in the end. I feel that people connect and find out more about you with your blog.

you can be more yourself, or really express yourself i.e. in a business manner, humourously, seriously, tragically etc. So its more of an experience for the user at the other end than sitting infront of a website with a bit advertising logo or banner ad.

Apparently Michael Arrington now has other people writing most of his articles while he gets on with his other projects - from the original article "can Arrington keep up the momentum and the quality? TechCrunch faces the problem of many successful blogs, that of moving from a single personality to a product, while keeping the spark that drew readers in the first place. Arrington employs five full-time writers and five part-timers. “TechCrunch has lost something now that it’s more than Arrington,” someone recently posted in the comment section at TechCrunch. “There was a charm to TC when it was just MA sledding downhill at 80,000 MPH on the seat of his pants.”

He's also gots lots of other businesses he's involved in, so maybe $150,000 is just small change to him ?
