I've just read on one blogger's blog that his ads. bring in a net profit of tens of thousands of dollars a month, that he gets almost 2 million a visitors a month, and that he receives 1000 - 2000 dollars a month just in donations ! Who are these people that donate money to bloggers ? He has a 'donate here' button on his blog and apparently this brings in around 1000 - 2000 dolalrs a month. I must add that he says he doesn't think this is an effective business model by itself. Does anyone here use this method ?

If he has really awsome content that someone finds useful, they will donate.

I've donated to sites that have helped me in the past. Also for people that give away free scripts, I've given them money. Some places I visit rely on donations as a means of income and hosting charges.

I am totally against that. Donations are meant for charities to help others. Not to help yourself.:censored:

You don't have to call it a donate button. It could be a "tip jar" or "Buy me a beer" button, you get the idea. If people like your stuff that you are giving out for free, sometimes they want to give you a few bucks.

I tried it, advertising pulls in more $$.

It's called Micropatronage and has been around in the Web Standards community (of all places!) for a while now. It's certainly an idea which is worth exploring, and I have explored it briefly in the page and will be doing so again in the near future.
