New article by me. Full article can be found on the link below, let me know what you guys think.

Staying motivated is one of the biggest problems I’ve noticed in myself as well as a few friends of mine who run their own websites.

You get excited about a new idea for a site or blog, pour a week of great work into it and then go into depression over poor results. I’ve done this a few times myself and that is the problem at hand. Your goals should be long term if you want to make it big. Sure there are those who have had the occasional overnight wonder but those are few and far between.

Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Keeping motivated through months and months of hard work and realization will bring true success. Even if you don’t get to exactly where you want to be, you will still be proud of what you did and the hard work that you put into it. I have put together a list that should help you stay focused and stay motivated.

Visualize your success.

Getting up everyday and updating your blog or website could definitely get repetitive (I’ve been there). When it does, take the time to visualize where and how you want the website to look or run in the future, a vision of success. If you have 500 visitors a day, visualize how robust the site will be if 5,000 visitors came everyday. Work towards that goal and always keep it in mind.

Set goals that you can achieve.

This is probably the best way to keep motivated. In relation to websites and blogs, I set goals for the amount of visitors I want to bring in per day and per month and I strive to hit those goals. Along with that, I also have earnings goals. Your goals should be unique to whatever you want to get out of your project. Set a time to sit down & think and then once you are satisfied, write those goals down somewhere so you don’t lose them.

Lightning Tip: Set both short term and long term goals.

Get inspired.

Visit other websites that are in your niche. If someone has something better, get inspired by it. It’ll make you work harder seeing what your competition is up to. Strive to be the best. Take in everything you can, turn your brain into a sponge of knowledge.

Lightning Tip: Join a forum (community) discussion board in relation to your niche and start actively participating in it. This will boost your motivation and hopefully earn you some new readers! Be sure to post intelligently and make a name for yourself.

Push yourself, eliminate laziness.

Easier said than done. You are your own boss. Take pride in this fact but don’t go easy on yourself. You want to be the best? You need to reach for it, reach and reach until you can’t reach anymore. Do your homework, research, reading and more reading. To be the best you have to be well-rounded. Reading other blogs in the same area will keep you motivated and on top of things.

Hope these tips helped you out! Good luck.

Well said, and very true. I'm as guilty as any when it comes to "website puppy love".

What I found helps me is following this process:

1. Get a new idea
2. Identify the idea's potential
3. Wait 1-2 months
4. Evaluate if you're still interested
5. Work backwards, on paper, step by step, from the final potential to where you are today.
6. Follow those steps

Sounds like you're opening yourself up to missed opportunities by waiting 1-2 months, but for a full site or similar idea, 1-2 months won't matter if the idea is really worth pursuing. Domaining is another story, because if you don't act immediately, someone else will, and it's not the same free-competition marketplace as actual website building.

True - money is one of the main motivation factors. Nothing wrong with that.

I have photocopies of the checks I've received from my online endeavors taped up all over the walls in my home office.

A good solid article, which I truly agree with. The number one reason why blogs fail are simply coz of lack of motivation.
