Does anyone see drastic day-to-day changes in feedburner statistics? Especially on the weekend, the number of subscribers to my blog will fluctuate between 10-15 subscribers. Is that normal? Are there any other programs besides Feedburner that keep track of subscribers?

I find that feedburner jumps all over the place with the stats, but stick with it.

Feedburner always jumps a lot..
Sometimes it forgets to count email subscribers, and sometimes google readers.

Since it went to google's hands they became crap.
But we can't leave using it as its awesome to make people stick to our blog.

Fluctuation is normal. Feedburner isn't reporting how many subscribers you have in total, but rather how many they can connect to on a given day. Say someone subscribed to your blog uses a feed reader client on their desktop, but doesn't open it one day. That person won't be recorded as a subscriber on the day they didn't open their client.

You'll see the numbers will usually stay consistent for online readers because those readers are still active regardless of whether or not someone actually visits your blog.

For example say you use iGoogle as your home page and you have some rss feeds set up on the page. You're going to be counted as a subscriber because iGoogle will be reporting back to FeedBurner daily. I'm using the Sage extension for Firefox. If for some reason I don't open Firefox one day I won't be counted as a subscriber of any of the blogs I read for that day.

And a small point to mention,
Keep developing your blog, not caring about how many feed subscribers you are having.

10-15 subscribers is a fluctuation you'll see if you have <1000 subscribers.

This weekend, my blog dropped 300 subscribers. And I think it's actually a Feedburner glitch this time. If you see anything substantial like that, it's time to worry (until the next day when it gets all sorted out... if it gets all sorted out).

But yeah, in general, there's always fluctuation. I really don't know why because I don't change my feed subscriptions at all that often but some people must be doing that. Don't be too concerned about it.

Here's a post from the FeedBurner blog where they looked at the numbers for TechCrunch as a case study to explain some of there stats.

With the feed counts the posts says:

Quote:
Due to the way feed-reading tools behave, it is completely normal for this number to fluctuate. For example, some people who read TechCrunch access the feed using a desktop feed reader such as NetNewsWire and these folks may turn off their computers on the weekends. During that time, the TechCrunch feed isn't being polled and the subscriber isn't being counted, which is reported accordingly.
Tamar I didn't notice a drop this weekend, but every so often I'll wake to half the number of subscribers I had the day before. First I panic and then the rational part of me realizes (or maybe just hopes) it's a glitch.

My number was 135 and now decreased to 105 right now. This was the biggest fluctuation seen by me.
Sometimes it shows 0 totally.

Sometimes FeedBurner does have glitches. I think the last time they weren't reading info from Google Reader so it didn't count anyone who subscribed through Reader. It's probably on one of those glitch days where you showed 0.

The 135 - 105 seems normal. Maybe a little more fluctuation than usual, but still within reasonable range.

Yeah, you know it really happens. I also have blogs and have the problem encountered.

RAQUEL

If you haven't checked out book trailers, or if you want to see some really cools ones I've found a few places that are really good. My favorite is on YouTube at www.youtube.com/booktrailers, but I also like the new ones on the BN.com site at www.bn.com and go to the BN Studio, and I love the Borders Media site too. VidLits are pretty cool www.vidlits.com. http://www.youtube.com/booktrailers
