Spam definitely lowers the quality of a blog. I think it shows a lack of interest and responsibility. It also gives me the feeling like I'm going through someone else's garbage which is just plain weird. If you can't take the time to eliminate or preemtively stop the spam on your blog, I can't take the time to read or comment on it.

Look at the comments. You don't have to scroll very far to see blatant spam, and lots of it. This blog is just the URL I have off hand - my question applies more generally.

If a blog is otherwise "good" (in the eyes of the reader), do spam comments take away from its goodness?

IMO, it lessens the credibility of a blog by a notch. This is because when there is too much spam comments on a post, it appears to me as if the blog's owner doesn't really put too much effort in reading his readers' comments on his posts. If he did, I doubt there would be any spam comment visible anywhere.
