Relax Nick....
Chris is not going to ban you just because you disagree with him.
We are adult that can take a real debate and even enjoy it, as long as everyone stays calm and polite.
What Chris wanted to say, I think, is that you should consider your web site like you would consider a real shop.
You have to tell peoples that you exists, and search engine are not the only way to do it.
So, as he recommended, try to get link back from sites related to yours, buy ad placement on relevant sites, and spread the word that you have something to add.
And on that, it's me to disagree with you.
A web site selling something and a shop in broad light are to be considered the same, and handled with the same serious attitude.
You would need to promote and maybe conclude deal with complementary shop to, if you are trying to get in a busy niche, to let peoples know you.
I, for sure, don't wander in a shop just because it's new.
I usually know where I go shopping, and as I know that I will find what I want/need there, don't look much on new shops for what I've already found.
The same with web sites.
I have a handle of "daily visited" urls, but otherwise, it's mostly what others recommend me (or if I see an ad or banner that interest me enough to click it) that will bring me on new sites.
I use search engines almost exclusively for informations, and if I don't find it in the first 3/4 seconds, I leave the site usually, trying another google result.
And if the site looks even remotly like a MFA site, with more ads than text, I don't even try to look at it.
It simply gets ignored.
