Think, The OP has started this thread about self hosted wordpress (example.com) and it seems some of the people misunderstood it and talked about free wordpress blogs (example.wordpress.com) and free blogspot blogs. Nice to see some of the people don't know what they are talking about.
And coming to the original post, Yes, Wordpress is the best blogging script to install on your own domain. And it's very easy to maintain and customize with all those free plugins which offer more flexibility to already flexible wordpress script. Once thing I like most about wordpress is the availability of all those free themes.
You could also take a look at Joomla, Drupal kind of CMS's if you think you can work a bit more harder to understand them for even more flexibility and more features.
