Basically the blog and "advanced blog" features of drupal leave a LOT to be desired in terms of look, and without HEAVY CSS and module modification they kinds of look crappy...

Are there any modules which allow for "better looking" or more professional looking users blogs for drupal? Or am I going to have to go in and just mess with CSS and the module code until I can get it looking nice.

I suggest you to go with wordpress which has better option to modify your code accoridng to your requirement. You can also get easy support and plugin for that.

I'm using Wordpress and I'm completely satisfied with it - many free plug-ins, templates, etc.
