I am new to blogging and decided to use Blogger. I had trouble with a template that I wanted to use with my new blog so got rid of it in favor of another one. What I was not prepared for was loosing half my content when I did so.
My blog is more for reference and I have a LOT of widgets that I use to list links to other sites (houseoffaux.com). I found that when I put a new template on all these widgets are lost along with my links. Is there something I can do to protect the blog so if I ever have to change templates again I will not loose everything and will not have to start over?
Well, its good to go for blogger to start blogging but its all templates are fine and you can change its template if anyone have errors. Also you can add widgets by adding page element section.
From what I know, usually not because a lot of the Blogger templates are hardcoded. I guess the best way is to keep a saved copy of your widgets to use incase you need to change templates. Or, you can save yourself time and work (in the long run) by moving to another platform like WordPress.

You can't avoid to lose all the widgets when you change your template. The only thing I can advice is that back up your template coding first before you chance your template again; so that you will not lose those widgets codes. Just curious: why you need to change your template so frequently?

If you don't want to lost everything you have done just edit the default template that you are using and just edit the design. But don't removed the other code on the template.

As far as my experience is concerned, i have started using blogger in the initial times and added some widgets to it, since i added only less widgets and so i think i didn't had this problem which you are having. I suggest you to go for Word Press that would really help you out .
Is is easy to convert Blogger to Wordpress or is it a manual one by one transfer? I have this as a resource site and a lot of info to move if I find I have to.
I am also using blogger and it is really necessary to save your template before doing anything from it or else you will have problem recovering your data..
Some templates have this script or coding which may not enable the widgets that you're going to add once more when downloading another theme for your blog. Although I would agree that if you really are interested in always updating its style, why just edit the background, table, border links and just leave the whole coding as it is. Coding takes a lot of time and you shouldn't be doing that all over again.
this is the reason why im moving my primary blog from blogspot to typepad. none original blogspot template that looks good. looks is everything for me.
