As a "few" have touched on blog commenting is not considered spam if you are actually contributing something to the discussion... something relevant.
Commenting with something like, "Nice post" or "Thanks for sharing", is typically spam. Be even then, it's only really considered spam from the blog owner's perspective.
I would be more concerned with the following:

How can you possibly call yourself a "freelance SEO" if you have to ask a question like this? It's people like you who learn a few VERY basic concepts or buzzwords about SEO and then go out and sell themselves as some sort of "professional" SEO that give the whole industry a bad name. If you have to ask that question, you have no business getting paid to do SEO work.
Sorry if that sounds harsh, but it's a fact.
