WordPress is VERY free... Learning it is easy. All you need to do (or what I HIGHLY suggest that you do) is to get a paid hosting account somewhere like GoDaddy, BlueHost, or HostGator.
I have a deluxe hosting account with dedicated IP at GoDaddy and pay about $9/month... That is CHEAP and the service is great. I can skip one cheap lunch out each month to afford it. And most of these web host will install WP for you with a one-click installation. I can host as many domains as I want under my GoDaddy account for that $9/month. And I have more bandwidth than I will every use... and 25 instances of MySQL... tons of email space/addresses... etc.
And if $9 is going to make or break you then you're likely not too serious about your blog.
There are a million good books that can get you up and running on WordPress. Even WordPress for Dummies can help... I think I just installed it and it was so intuitive that I figured it out myself.
One other suggestion...
Buy a good premium theme. The absolute best theme for WP IMO is Thesis by DIYThemes (diythemes.com/thesis). It's a beautiful, professional looking theme and VERY SEO friendly out of the box. It has tons of built in features including the ability to do almost anything you want from an SEO perspective). I think it's $85 or so for a single site license or $165 for a developer license which entitles you to user it on as many sites as you want and to remove the attribution from the footer. You also get lifetime upgrades for free and they have a huge support community.
