a lot of people told you to get unique content and it is the most important thing. but you shouldn't forget that putting the proper amount of keywords in each of your articles is essential as well. Here are some other aspects of getting traffic.
1. domain age
2. google trust.
3. related backlinks from dofollow or nofollow resources.
I wouldnt advise you to submit your blogs into some blog directories as google can show your article that this particular directory took from you(most of them do that) on lower position than on your blog. I had that problem and one day i completely cut off all my backlinks from those dir.

It depends that on which niche you are writing. Write a blog and post your blog links in niche sites and there you will have referral traffic or there are some websites that invite writers to write for their website. You can earn money from there as well.
